A short season and easy to grow popcorn, with a rich nutty flavour. The cobs are a deep black with a ruby red tint. The kernels are quite compact when popped, which makes them extra crunchy. This variety comes from the Podoll family (Prairie Road Organic Farm) in North Dakota – who also bred our Sweet Dakota Rose watermelon.

Growing recommendations

Seed a few seeds per foot your garden or field and thin to 6” apart in rows 30-36” apart after chance of frost has passed. Amend with compost or manure for best yields. Harvest when the whole plant has dried down, which can be well after frost. Dry further by the stove to ensure a high popping percentage. Season with salt, butter and a little maple syrup for a tasty winter treat.

We're trialing and breeding new varieties!

This is the most challenging and thrilling part of our work.

The trialing allows us to test varieties of a same species side by side and determine which one(s) taste and perform the best.

Breeding and variety maintenance means selecting for traits that are desirable such as flavor, texture, disease resitance, earliness and hardiness, just to mention a few.
