An early-maturing heirloom grain from Inner Mongolia, Ba-Ye-Ki Sorghum combines practical value with striking ornamental appeal. Its tall, graceful plants produce elegant bronze-red seed heads that shimmer in the sun and bring height and texture to the garden. Productive and resilient, it adapts well to a range of soils and shorter growing seasons. The small red grains can be used whole, ground into gluten-free flour, or fermented for traditional beverages, while the sturdy stalks serve well for crafts or natural materials.

Growing recommendations
Sow seeds directly outdoors after the soil has warmed and all risk of frost has passed, usually from late May to early June. Plant ½ inch deep in full sun and well-drained soil, spacing plants 8–12 inches apart in rows 2–3 feet apart. Keep the plot weed-free during early growth, as seedlings compete poorly when young. Ba-Ye-Ki requires little care once established and matures in roughly 100–110 days. Harvest in late summer or early fall when the seed heads have dried and the grains are firm and fully colored

We're trialing and breeding new varieties!
This is the most challenging and thrilling part of our work.
The trialing allows us to test varieties of a same species side by side and determine which one(s) taste and perform the best.
Breeding and variety maintenance means selecting for traits that are desirable such as flavor, texture, disease resitance, earliness and hardiness, just to mention a few.
You're one of a kind
If you're not 100% satisfied with your purchase, let us know and we'll make it right!
