These gorgeous deep purple and very ruffled poppies are complete show-stoppers. They are aptly named - the 4” across blooms really resemble peonies! They grow very tall and vigorously. The seed pods also make interesting additions to dried arrangements, and the seeds can be used in cooking. These poppies grow 36” tall.

Growing recommendations
Annual. Papaver somniferum. Poppies dislike being transplanted, so it’s best to direct sow them in the garden very early in spring, even before the last frost. Sow outdoors in full sun, spacing plants 8–12 inches apart. Black Magic prefers well-drained soil. Deadhead spent flowers to extend the blooming period.

The trialing allows us to test varieties of a same species side by side and determine which one(s) taste and perform the best.
Breeding and variety maintenance means selecting for traits that are desirable such as flavor, texture, disease resitance, earliness and hardiness, just to mention a few.
