This rather mild hot pepper (4 on the Scoville scale - the same as black pepper) is an heirloom from le Pays Basque. It is traditionally dried on garlands in the sun and used as a pepper substitute.

Growing recommendations
Seed peppers in flats or cell trays 1/4”deep 8 weeks before last frost (seed late March to mid-April). Pepper seeds are slow to germinate, especially in cool soil, so keep soil moist and be patient. Transplant 18”-24” apart when days are warm and there is no longer any risk of frost.

The trialing allows us to test varieties of a same species side by side and determine which one(s) taste and perform the best.
Breeding and variety maintenance means selecting for traits that are desirable such as flavor, texture, disease resitance, earliness and hardiness, just to mention a few.
